From the Washington Post: Best Buys for the Summer Bar. Summer drinks are always tough for me, much less stocking a full bar. I usually stick with beer. But here’s what I think is the most interesting from the recipes provided: Odd McIntosh, employing one of my favorite liquors, applejack:
Ingredients:
- Ice
- 3/4 ounces Lillet Blanc
- 3/4 ounces Cointreau
- 3/4 ounces applejack
- 3/4 ounces freshly squeezed lemon juice
- Orange slice, for garnish
Directions:Fill two-thirds of a cocktail shaker with ice and add the liquid ingredients. Stir vigorously and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with an orange slice.
Similar to a Tom Collins, a John Collins is made with bourbon. It’s an interesting summer drink, similar to one of my favorites, the Moscow Mule.
- 1.5 oz of Bourbon (I used Jim Beam)
- 1 oz of Lemon Juice (fresh squeezed or the bottle type)
- Pour into a glass over ice.
- Stir.
- Pour into a highball glass, over ice.
- Add an ounce or so of simple syrup. To taste, really
- Fill with club soda to the brim
- Garnish with circle of lime and a plastic monkey
Serve.
